The Country House

The Country House

Located at a truly pristine site in the Lafisti village, in Viotia, Greece, this country house is simply exquisite.

Our goal here was to transform an abandoned old stable and adjacent building, into a family home for three, by completely renovating it in a way that would be consistent with, and respectful to, the environment.
However, the decision to build from scratch was made in the end since the stable was in such terrible state, not allowing for a partial extension to be added, in order to accommodate two spacious bedrooms.

Trying to form the best possible construction between the old building with its existing outdoor terrace, (the old stable and the new addition) we created a journey of a strong narrative to be told while looking at the stunning views of the Kopaida valley below. Each successive space celebrates a different aspect of the house, featuring split-level spaces, narrow and wide thresholds, in addition to private and communal rooms.

After going through the main gate and the old wood-burning oven, we gazed through the front terrace at the panoramic views of the valley and the old building, the new added extension now becoming clearly noticeable. Before that, on the right, are the stairs to the new upper-level terrace and pool deck, where the main entrance of the house is located.

Old stable & architectural proposal, floor layout plans
The boundaries of the original building were kept the same; as we wished for the façade to gracefully tie in with its surroundings, we opted for local stone, using traditional building techniques. Indoors, there is an open-plan space (where the old stable used to be), with a sort of “hidden” kitchen next to the lounge area, boasting a dominating fireplace, while, on the left, situated is the heart of the house, the dining area, and an indoor glazed-roof patio with magnificent views of the garden. This patio acts as a central hub for all rooms connected to it.

All areas have direct access to the outdoors and lounge, and all bedrooms feature large picture windows overlooking the valley below. Interfering as little as possible, the variation between upper and lower-level spaces follows the natural contours of the site, making one’s experience simply great!
